Youth Sports Carnival
It has been voted by many Druze families as one of the most successful
and enjoyable outings for 2005. The Youth Sports Carnival, which took
place on Sunday 19th June at Campbell Hill Pioneer Reserve, was an
outstanding event organised and coordinated by the Youth Druze Committee
which had catered for the entire family.
The carnival which commenced at the break of dawn and, lasted through
out the entire day, attracted a turnout of more than 200 Druze brothers
and sisters, who all actively participated in the day’s activities.
These activities included team sports of soccer, football and volleyball
for both adults and children, the three-legged races which were a
particular favourite of the women of our community, and the infamous
tug of war that inspired the entire gathering to battle it out… while
the kiddies were kept entertained on the jumping castle, giving their
parents time to enjoy the carnival. Individuals of the victorious teams
were rewarded with a black shoulder bag courtesy of ResMed and Kamal Badreddine.
The Carnival raffle included prizes of jewellery (a watch from Nader Jewellers),
binoculars (courtesy of CR Kennedy and M. Sarrayeldine), shoulder bags
(courtesy of ResMed), Hairdressing vouchers (courtesy of Bassil Mahmoud),
and a contemporary collection of CDs and DVDs. The auction of Lebanese
sweets sold at an astounding $50, which saw Ramzi and Nesrine Esrawi as
the winning bidders. There generosity further extended when the tray of
sweets was offered for the community to enjoy.
A big thank you is given to the Women’s Druze Committee who generously offered
their time and effort in preparing the food to help bring about this wonderful
event. On behalf of the entire Australian Druze Community and in alphabetical
order, we would like to give individual recognition to these women:
Samar Abdel Baki, Shadia Assaf, Hiam Elbasha, Claudia Elbrihi, Samira Ghebar,
Soha Ghabbar, I3tidal Mahmoud, Siham Mahmoud, Diana Munzer, Christina Sweid
and Rajaa Younes.
The youth sports carnival was the first event for 2005 organised and
coordinated by the Youth Druze Committee working in conjunction with the
Women’s Druze Committee. A day that promised fun and entertainment for all,
managed to deliver much, much more. Its success is a true reflection of
the strength of the current Australian Druze Community organisation and its
committees. The unwavering support of the wider Druze community will make
this carnival the first of the many more successful events to come.
